EPFC North

Echo Park Film Centre North is open at Moberly Fieldhouse, Vancouver, Canada!

Eco-friendly cinematic wonder. * Plant-based art and animation. * Community stories. * Collaborative creativity. * Films. * Food. * Fun. * Everyone welcome!

Through an ongoing series of free public workshops and screenings, neighbours and friends work with organic materials grown in the community garden and surrounding area as ingredients to create eco-friendly films that celebrate growing, community, and connection to the urban landscape.

This project is generously supported by the Vancouver Park Board’s Field House Activation Program which provides project space and access to parks to foster community-engaged activity that focuses: arts, culture, sport, environment, local food and social encounters.

To learn more about all the other Fieldhouse studio projects, go to City of Vancouver Field House Programs in Parks

For more info and images about what’s going on at Moberly Fieldhouse, check out EPFC North on FacebookTumblr and Instagram!

EPFC North workshops, screenings and special events take place on the Unceded Territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Territorial acknowledgements are just one small part of dismantling colonial worldviews.  Please take a moment to think of other ways you can enact decolonization.

*Please Note: Physical distancing safety protocols are in effect for all EPFC North Moberly Fieldhouse events. Workshop activities and screenings will take place outdoors with 2-meter spacing required between individuals. Please bring a mask; we will have some on hand if you forget. Disposable vinyl gloves and hand sanitizer provided. We are unable to serve refreshments so please provide your own snack if you’d like something to eat or drink during the workshop. Thanks for your cooperation in helping to keep everyone healthy!

Discussion (Online via Zoom): EARTH
Wednesday, May 4
6 pm – 7 pm
Join us on Wednesday, May 4th at 6 p.m. on Zoom for a special online film discussion co-presented by EPFC and Edendale Library in Los Angeles, CA. We’ll be discussing a film chosen by Lisa and Paolo from the Echo Park Film Center that honors the great nation of Ukraine — Alexander Dovzhenko’s 1930 masterpiece Earth.  This impressionistic silent film follows a group of poor farmers on a collective who come into conflict with wealthier ‘kulak’ landowners.  The mantle of leadership is passed to Vasili when his grandfather dies, and he organizes the farmers to buy a tractor, a triumph that soon turns to tragedy.  Despite all tribulations the farmers press on, sustained by their deep connection to the land. Watch the film in advance and join via Zoom to join an informal discussion.

distantpomegranates  APRIL 2022

Welcome breathing room artist in residence April 2022: Mia Glanz!

breathing room reimagines the artist residency as a fluid space for collaboration, experimentation, relaxation, and community connection. We are delighted to announce our April 2022 breathing room artist in residence: Mia Glanz.

Facilitated by Iris Film Collective and EPFC North, breathing room artists are provided with some filmmaking materials and equipment, technical and creative support, and access to work/exhibition space at Moberly and/or Burrard View Fieldhouse. The residency also includes optional opportunities for artists to engage with the local community via workshops, talks, screenings and other public activities. breathing room artists are invited to share their creative discoveries at a free public in-person and/or online event on the last Thursday of their residency.

Mia Glanz is an artist living in Mexico City and Vancouver. Working with photography, video, text, ethnography, and new media, her work attends to material culture as an exploration of personhood and social conditions. Mia has a degree in anthropology and plant biology from the University of British Columbia. She has exhibited in Mexico and Canada. Group shows in Vancouver include the Richmond Art Gallery, Access Gallery, Ho Tam Gallery, and Hatch Art Gallery, and photography as performance with the Dance Centre BC. Currently she is making virtual installations with the new media collective Society Visual Music, and working on an image/text book project about the stories in the spaces of the Puerto Rico Apartments in Mexico City.

During my time at the breathing room residency I will be using Super 8 and 16mm film to collect moving samples of the “real” world. I will learn how to edit the film physically and will combine these tools with digital editing to create a fast paced and abstract narrative with a typically analog tactile aesthetic; a music video for a techno track from Mexican producer Eliobeth.

Free event! Everyone welcome!

Created as part of the project “The Use of Technology as Ritual and Resistance”, Ritual is a collaboration with Vague Research Studios; Kajsa G Eriksson and Lena Berglin and Maria Magnusson. The film explores energy greed as a social phenomenon, ritual as an artistic method, and has been filmed in eleven places in Sweden: Burseryd, Kinnekulle, Sandviken, Hofors, Grängesberg, Njakafjäll, Meselefors, Kallak, Ligga, Messaure, and Jokkmokk. In the selected localities, there exists a historical connection to the extraction of raw materials needed to produce energy. This history is relevant today as we transition to green energy and to the use of renewable raw source materials. The artists have specifically chosen to highlight how urban lifestyles are dependent on the natural environment and people in sparsely populated communities in Sweden.”

Event: Odyssey: presented as part of the 2022 Capture Festival and the April 2022 breathing room residency
Saturday, April 23 at the IRIS Collective Fieldhouse, Burrard View Park
8 – 10 PM
Society Visual Music continues to explore the social and cultural repercussions of the pandemic through video and sound. The project was formed by the limitations of the pandemic, particularly the need to communicate electronic music performance in video packages. As we begin to physically gather together again, everything is not the way it was. Among other schisms, we are divided between our digital and physical selves more than ever. In order to make this change visible, Society Visual Music’s Odyssey will be projected on a screen located outside at Iris Film Collective in Burrard View Park. The projection of a DJ set will stand-in for a physical DJ and set-up. Society Visual Music will film the audience and space during the casual screening event. The live footage will be combined in real time with the Odyssey projection using TouchDesigner, immediately turning the experience digital and 2-D, equalizing audience and performer on screen.

Hân Pham!
Hân Phạm (b.1999) is an emerging Vietnamese documentary/ experimental filmmaker and artist from Saigon, Vietnam. Working with experimental haptic video and film, photography, and soundscape compositions, her works often thinks through the ephemerality of memory, language, and history in relation to the constantly changing and dislocated landscapes, rooting in the inbetweeness of distance as space for reflection. Hân has exhibited at Vancouver International Film Festival, DOXA Documentary Film Festival, Milwaukee Underground Film Festival, Vancouver Queer Film Festival, and Vines Arts Festival, presented her work in a public installation with Mount Pleasant Community Art Screen in 2020-2021, and participated in the VIFF Catalyst Mentorship Program.

Ism, Ism, Ism: Experimental Cinema in Latin America (Ismo, Ismo, Ismo: Cine experimental en América Latina) was organized by Los Angeles Filmforum as part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles. Ism, Ism, Ism surveys Latin America’s vibrant experimental production from the 1930s through today. www.ismismism.org

Ism, Ism, Ism is accompanied by a bilingual publication, Ism, Ism, Ism / Ismo, Ismo, Ismo: Experimental Cinema in Latin America (Jesse Lerner and Luciano Piazza, editors, University of California Press, 2017) placing Latino and Latin American experimental cinema within a broader dialogue that explores different periods, cultural contexts, image-making models, and considerations of these filmmakers within international cinema. Available worldwide, https://www.ucpress.edu/book.php?isbn=9780520296084.

Lead support for Ism, Ism, Ism is provided through grants from the Getty Foundation.   Significant additional support comes from the Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts.  Pacific Standard Time is an initiative of the Getty.

Learn what they are, the relation between them and why they occur in plants. Math has simple rules and complex consequences but plants have been around enough time to figure it out. Bring a ruler, a protractor (if you have one) and a calculator and come to learn how to draw a Fibonacci and a Golden ratio spiral and how to recognize when a plant does the math! Workshop presented by Adele Ruosi, Physics Instructor at Capilano U and at the University of Naples, Italy.

Workshop: Non-Binary Paper Dolls Explore-a-thon                            Sunday, September 15
1 – 4 pm
Dressing to reflect or disguise identity can be a provocation, a bore, an exhibition of fashion’s artistry, a work-functional necessity, a luxury, a burden. Anyone near a thrift store, a donation box, a credit card, a friend who loves to share their attire, can look wealthy-scruffy, poor yet incredibly elegant, overtly sexual or utterly asexual, simple or showy, human or alien. Image-making and ID deconstruction by way of clothing ourselves is a joy, a puzzle, a survival skill. We may harbour more old-fashioned notions in our fashion choices than we realize as we unconsciously or very consciously dress as we do for ourselves, our jobs and our world.  Come draw, discuss, create with us at The Non-Binary Paper Doll Explore-a-thon! No artistic skills required. Free event! Everyone welcome!

Screening: Vinegar Syndrome presents ON THE MOVE plus Films by Beaux Mingus
Sunday, October 13
5 pm – 7 pm
Vinegar Syndrome is our Gong Show-style grab bag series of short educational and ephemeral films, plumbing the depths of EPFC’s impressive film library. For enthusiasts of found footage and collage films, it’s a great way to learn what kinds of films are available at the Film Center—the weird, the cool, the good, the bad, the ugly. All films are selected purely by title around a specific theme and we won’t be previewing anything, so we’ll be just as surprised as you guys! This show’s theme is ON THE MOVE–Films about traveling, moving forward, thumbing for a ride and flying high! As always, there will be lots of snacks and plenty of silly commentary from your host–visiting Artist In Residence Beaux Mingus–and our feisty audience. And speaking of Beaux Mingus, we’ll start the evening off with a few of Beaux’s best loved short films! Free event! Everyone welcome!

November 2019

Workshop and Screening: floppy disk filmmaking – workshop and screening installations by Florian Cramer
Saturday, November 2
1 pm – 5 pm
Workshop (limited to 6 participants): With its tiny capacity, slow speed and glitchiness, the 3.5″ floppy disk is a difficult medium for moving images. However, its constraints can be embraced as a creative challenge, and as a learning tool for understanding data compression and the messy analog hardware underlying digital technology. In this workshop, participants will learn how to make their own moving images on floppy disks using Open Source software. No previous technical knowledge is required. Participation is limited to 6 people. Please bring your own laptop, if you have one.

Installation (open to general public): Parallel to the workshop, visual poetry Super 8 film loops (based on texts by Ernst Jandl and Moor Mother/Camae Ayewa) and select floppy disk films will be screened.
