Film Friends is a monthly series that brings established and emerging filmmakers together online for informal discussions on everything analog cinema. Season 2’s theme is Simple Machines. Zoom in on July 9 at 10 AM Pacific Time as our series continues with a discussion on 16mm pinhole cameras and contact printing with the Amanda Thomson of Vancouver’s Iris Collective. Free event! Amanda Thomson is a film maker, presenter and facilitator who was born, raised and
currently lives on the unceded territory belonging to the Coast Salish people,
commonly known as Vancouver BC. She is drawn to film by its tactile qualities and
by its shifting nature in grain and cultural significance. She studied Film Video and
Integrated Media at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design receiving a Bachelor
of Media Arts in 2009. In 2014 she helped form the Iris Film Collective who are the
current residents of the Burrard View Field House courtesy of the Vancouver Board
of Parks and Recreation.
Her films have screened in festivals, on beaches and everywhere in between including
at the Space Centre in Vancouver, Antimatter Media Arts Festival in Victoria,
CROSSROADS at the San Francisco Cinematheque, as part of the Avant Guard Film
Week at Yale University and in the Contre Courant Festival & Symposium in
Montreal.
She has taken programs from her collective on the road presenting them at the Echo
Park Film Center in Los Angeles, at LaborBerlin’s Difraktion in Germany and as part
of Back to the Future: Project! in Rotterdam, ND. She has also organized expanded
cinema performances, screenings and workshops for touring filmmakers including
Night Country by San Francisco based duo John Davis and Josh Churchill at the
Gold Saucer Studio; and Robert Schaller’s Evening for Film and Music which
included live cello and piano at the Western Front.
She’s participated in several artist-run film lab meetings, gatherings and conferences
including The Experimental Cinema Exposition’s Alternative Measures in Colorado
Springs, L’Alternativa Festival de Cine Independente de Barcelona’s Paral-lela on
Independent Film Labs ES, Bains Argentiques in Nantes FR, IMAA’s Analogue Film
Gathering in Calgary and Film in the Present Tense in Berlin.
