Three films in The Sound We See series will play Sunday, October 30 as part of the American Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland. The festival also features a conversation with Agnès Varda and new work by/about Werner Herzog, Jim Jarmusch and Jonas Mekas. The Sound We See is and international project of the Echo Park Film Center. It uses analog filmmaking techniques and references the “City Symphony” genre that balances a documentary approach with the avant-garde, as practiced in the 1920s by Alberto Cavalcanti (Nothing but Time) and Dziga Vertov (Man With a Movie Camera). Each film is made by teenage or multigenerational collectives. This year’s AFF presents films made in Tokyo, Los Angeles and Old Crow, Canada. It is a varied selection: the concrete giant rising from the ashes; a colossal city, which, seems surprisingly cozy even though it is Japan’s capital – like a small town lost in the near past. The styles of each segment also differ, ranging from an impressionistic fever, to noir film darkness, through simplicity and peace.
