Marvelous Movie Mondays: InLuma and Black Rain

EPFC | April 14th, 2020

MARVELOUS MOVIE MONDAYS!!
guest curator: Kerry St. Laurent

Theme: Tonal Contrast
We’re looking at films that explore contrast in the several ways we can interpret the word “tone” – sound, color, and mood – both in each individual piece and how they contrast with each other.

Today’s pairing explores contrast in scale, from imagined organisms speaking to “bio-electric
communication and organic consciousness” in Colleen Keough’s “InLuma” (2009) to the more cosmic “visual data as it tracks interplanetary space for solar wind and CME’s (coronal mass ejections) heading towards Earth” in “Black Rain” by Semiconductor (2009). Both explore black-and-white tonal contrast in different ways, ranging from sharp edges to softened greys.

EPFC Archive Deep Dive

EPFC | April 8th, 2020

This week on the Deep Dive we’re celebrating The Sound We See: A Los Angeles City Symphony created by the 37 participants of  EPFC’s Fall 2010 Youth Filmmaking Class and the first in our international series of community-made analog films that celebrate the contemporary urban (and not-so urban!) environments. This amazing poster was created for the premiere by EPFC Co-op Member Cosmo Segurson, who was also one of the instructors and part of the amazing musical ensemble for the SWS: LA project. We’re streaming clips from the film all week on Instagram @EPFCfilmmobile. Enjoy!

Marvelous Movie Mondays: Blue Movie vs Liquidator

EPFC | April 8th, 2020

MARVELOUS MOVIE MONDAYS!!
guest curator: Kerry St. Laurent

Theme: Tonal Contrast
We’re looking at films that explore contrast in the several ways we can interpret the word “tone” – sound, color, and mood – both in each individual piece and how they contrast with each other.

Today’s first pairing is “Blue Movie” by Michael Morris (2016) and “Liquidator” by Karel Doing (2010). Both manipulate archival footage and use monochromatic palettes, but the end results span from romantic to sinister, vibrant to desaturated, and rounded to sharp. See for yourself and tell us how you think these two films work (or don’t) together!

Preparation:
* Get whatever materials you feel like, ready for 7pm.
Could be just a pencil and paper, some rubber bands, a massive paint brush, a cardboard box, charcoal, pens, monoprinting stuff, some collage materials, a cauliflower – really whatever you want, whatever you feel like using.

At the end of the session, please scan / photograph your work and send it to *me* (DM for email address) and I will assemble and post it all up on FB as usual.

Art Club Frome ethos:
These are things we remind ourselves of at the start of live Art Club:

* All abilities – you don’t have to be an ‘artist’.
* The idea of Art Club is to have time to experiment, make, and mess around with some materials to see what happens, maybe something you don’t normally think of making or have the time to make.
* We use an inspiration to get us going – a theme – and each person can respond as they want.
* Let the theme inspire you but don’t worry if you go off somewhere else. It’s just a way of starting.
* Get some books about art or by other artists or whatever you pick off the shelf for inspiration / reference.
* If you get stuck, copy something / someone else for a while.
* You can make just one thing, or a few versions or just experiment
* Take your time
* It doesn’t have to be finished or even good!
* You can often free yourself from some constraints in the last 10 minutes of Art Club – watch out for that last minute thing and don’t hold back!
* You don’t have to keep your work, you can just recycle it.
The only rule is make!
