Marissa Chibas and John Hawk will screen their most recent dark comedy short, Zohra, in which an aging actress struggles with playing the role of an old nurse in an experimental film version of Medea. Zohra was integrated into a play, The Second Woman, which ran at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles for a month in 2016. This screening will also include three other previous shorts including Clara’s Los Angeles which was presented at REDCAT, and the San Diego Latino Film Festival, and Nostalgia, which was part of an installation just presented in Havana, Cuba in April of 2017. The two artists, who are both faculty members at CalArts, have collaborated over the past five years on these films with Chibas directing, writing, and acting, and Hawk serving as the director of photography, colorist and sound mixer as well as a general artistic consultant. The pieces have a political undertone and are often comedic while addressing a range of topics from racism and sexism to getting old, and Latin American revolutionary politics. FILMMAKERS IN ATTENDANCE!
