Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay (1988) is an extraordinarily rich portrait of the lives of children who inhabit the streets and slums of India’s largest metropolis. The film details the story of Chaipau, a boy who works for a local chaiwala in the heart of the city. Chaipau spends the entire film trying to save up the sum of 500 Indian Rupees (which in 1988 was equivalent to roughly $25 USD) to buy a train ticket to return to his village; in this process he is implicated in the underground economies of drug trafficking and prostitution that thousands of communities are financially bound to in India’s cities.
