The Echo Park Film Center presents a screening of Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s قندهار Kandahar (2001). Kandahar tells the true story of Nafes, a journalist who illegally journeys across the Iranian border into Afghanistan to stop her sister from committing suicide. Filmed in refugee camps in Iran, and also secretly in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, the film portrays the catastrophes survived by the Afghan people, such as the devastation wrought by the Russians during the Soviet Invasion as well as the subsequent takeover of the government by the Taliban. Kandahar is presented in conjunction with the series true-fiction: Meta-realism in South Asian Cinema.
