RACE AND SPACE IN LOS ANGELES II: FILMS FROM THE 1960s – 1970s

TUESDAY, APRIL 26 at 8 PM

A sequel to the sold-out program of the same name from 2014, tonight’s screening presents five short films about race and place in Los Angeles from the UCLA and USC archives. We’ll show the much-loved film Felicia (1965) again, which tells the story of an amazing young woman growing up in Watts in the 1960s and was recently named to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. New films in the program include a rare documentary about a transwoman in Los Angeles, a fiction film about a young boy who years to have a space of his own featuring Cora Lee Day, a documentary about illegal immigrant sweatshop workers, and a non-mainstream media exploration of the East Los Angeles Chicano Riot. Introduction and discussion by Dr. Marsha Gordon (North Carolina State University); curation in partnership with Dr. Allyson Nadia Field (University of Chicago); projection by archivist Dino Everett (USC).
