While the worlds of the films, while very much in the present, are imbued with a queer futurity and not solely “buddy films”, the core of each film is a relationship between two people on a “masculine” spectrum. According to Robert Kolker in a Cinema of Loneliness, “The buddy complex views sexuality as an obstacle to manly acts. But this denial of sexuality carries a covert admission of the possibility of homosexuality, which, of course, is inadmissible.” Obviously, that is not of concern in these films. With that concern out of the way, what do these films say about fantasy, trauma, whiteness, and language through relations built on exchanges of tenderness and curiosity?

In a mythic cyberfeminist universe, a frustrated young man yearns for affinity and connection. In this age of digital avatars, he crafts a version of himself that is far more corporeal. This lo-fi sci-fi short film is an experimental hybrid of documentary, fiction and performance art. It features two transgender men, playing a very queer version of their own characters as they perform aspects of themselves onscreen. Throughout the film they are haunted by a chimera, a post-human personification of the desires, fears and possibilities that form who we might be in the future. The film features a cast of Sydney queer artists and performers.

When an incident occurs with Laub’s mom, he heads off to the woods to seek comfort from a close friend. Johnny welcomes him at his home, a one-room cabin he has built for himself, in relative isolation, in the mountains outside of Santa Cruz, CA. They spend a few days together. Drawing from the quotidian to make queer bonds and sociality into art and an enactment towards healing and the ways radical honesty can confluence in everyday, commonplace means, a narrative portrait and a staged document of a friendship between 2 transgender individuals.

The Time-Eaters

The Time-Eaters follows the orientation of a freshly-minted human to earthly matters, both fleshly and phantasmagorical. This orientation, delivered by an ambiguously-gendered guide, is essentially a monologue that plays with comedic and narrative conventions while also exploring foundational questions about language: its relationship to knowledge, time, abstraction, experience, communication, and intimacy.
