New Works Salon XXXVI

The New Works Salons series is a casual forum for the presentation and discussion of new works in film, video, sound, and performance, with local and visiting artists in-person to introduce their work. Basma Alsharif will show her video Trompe l’Oeil. Relying on the idea of a Trompe l’Oeil, a trick of the eye, to design a space of familiar domesticity that hides within it pleasure, horror, and banality. Mike Stoltz and Alee Peoples will show their collaborative 16mm film Spotlight on a Brick Wall, a performance film that navigates expectations of both the audience and the makers. A series of false starts. Dub treatment on the laugh track. Diego Torres Peñaloza will show his work The Saga of the Poets, filmed on Super 8 it follows to female characters, Utopia and Demokracia, each developing their own history until in a moment their paths cross. Utopia receives the legacy of a mysterious woman named Grim Reaper, while Demokracia represents today’s youth facing authoritarianism and a conservative society. Mona Varichon will show her video Out of the Blueness, a docu-portrait built out of a compulsion to envision remote states. Anna Wittenberg will she her new video Maypole or The Eight Who Said Yes, in which eight men perform a pagan fertility rite, engaging in four types of play—chance, competition, mimicry, and vertigo—as they carry out their duties.
