NEW WORKS SALON XLVIII
Saturday, December 8 at 8PM
Doors 7:30 pm; $5 admission
The New Works Salons series is a casual forum for the presentation and discussion of new works in film, video, sound, and performance, with local and visiting artists in-person to introduce their work. This, the forty-eighth program in the series, will feature work by Madison Brookshire, David Chun, Brenda Contreras, Karissa Hahn, Gemma Jimenez, Cara Levine, and Linda Scobie. Madison Brookshire will show his new 16mm film Two. David Chun will show two new videos: Women Since Ever, examining the heritage of the feminine in my bloodline, and Games, a film essay about losers and quitters in athletics as emblems of our global preservation of fantasy at all costs. Brenda Contreras will show a new digital work shot on Super 8 called La Lucha Sigue: Marichuy in Mexico City. The work is a brief portrait of María de Jesús Patricio Martínez in Mexico City as she campaigned for the presidency of Mexico. The first indigenous woman in Mexico’s history to run for the position, and although she did not win, the campaign has been marked as a success with helping bring light to issues surrounding women and the indigenous communities of Mexico. Karissa Hahn will show her new 16mm film Future Light: “the year 2021 – experience the duration of 1 year in 24 frames for 24 hours of the day – 365 strips of film inkjet printed with the precise amount of light per day, including accurate twilight times.” Gemma Jimenez will show a brand new short video work. Cara Levine will show two recent video works both filmed while on at the Arctic Circle Residency in Svalbard: Becoming Lost and Emerald Mother. Both works emphasize a sensation of the essence of the Arctic slipping between her fingers, the inability and lack of desire to grasp, contain, hold onto the experience of this vulnerable, tragically beautiful environment. Linda Scobie will show two recent 16mm films: Decked Out—seconds at sea—and XYZ: Not in Ontario: “a rat race in the headlands. Some kind of Wieland/Frampton reference. Passion over reason.”
