The New Works Salons series is a casual forum for the presentation and discussion of new works in film, video, sound, and performance, with local and visiting artists often in-person to introduce their work. This, the fortieth program in the series, will include Paul’s Brain by Michele Jaquis, featuring Lorraine Pattison and the voices of Paul Pattison, Michele Jaquis, and Sinead Gavin. Paul’s Brain is an experimental documentary, in which two conversations, nine years apart, tell the story of one man’s struggle with epilepsy. Max Schulman will show his new video Mother and Child: “In making this film, I performed the piece Ragtime-Waltz, by Mauricio Kagel, on piano for my mother, and I interviewed her afterwards. We repeated this process thirty times in a row, over two days.” Tamara Rosenblum will show her new video 1, 2, 3, featuring Chantal Cherry, Jinglin Liao and Peter Guimaraes: “in 1990 a pair of college lovers, Jens Soering and Elizabeth Haysom, were convicted of murdering Elizabeth’s parents around the Haysom’s dinner table. During the trial Elizabeth described an abusive childhood and was diagnosed with a personality disorder by the court appointed psychologist. 1,2,3 explores Elizabeth’s relationship to her parents, imagining that heightened isolation caused a shared familial psychosis. Daily routine gives way to Elizabeth’s escape and the birth of her adult self. The violence of the murder is replaced by the violence of Elizabeth’s identity formation.” Jennifer Saparzadeh will show her new work Nu Dem, which traces Europe’s closed borders in the Spring of 2016, arriving at an informal settlement between Greece and Macedonia. There, people wait and try to move forward in anxious, stagnant flux–confronting the dissonance between a vision of freedom and the fact of its denial. The work was filmed in Idomeni, Berlin, Belgrade, Traiskirchen, and Vienna.
