The New Works Salons series is a casual forum for the presentation and discussion of new works in film, video, sound, and performance, with local and visiting artists often in-person to introduce their work. This, the fifty-second program in the series, will feature work by Cherlyn Hsing-Hsin Liu, Leanna Kaiser, and Nora Sweeney, all projected on 16mm. Cherlyn Hsing-Hsin Liu will show her film A Study of Fly, a reflection on the relationship between insect, human, environment, and the universe. The fly in this film can be approached as a living being, a metaphor for human desire to reach beyond, and a state that demonstrates the capacity to move between the realms of life and death. She says: “A Study of Fly, neither A Study of A Fly nor A Study of Flying. The fly in this film is both a noun and a verb, an analogue and a metaphor, and a state between life and death. The entire work was done with optical printer and hand processing. In the last passage you will see a CT scanned image of 1000-year-old buddha statue, inside which a real human body was discovered, mummified in a lotus position. It was a Buddhist monk who as he was dying decided to have himself sealed inside the statue. Was he trying to reach a state between human and buddha? Seeking a status between life, preserved life, and the afterlife? Shall we fly?” Leanna Kaiser will show Babes in the Woods, a portrait of Sage and her family living on a commune in rural Missouri, filmed over the course of 4 years. Nora Sweeney will show Birds of a Feather. “Elderly Armenian men convene daily at a park in Glendale, California to play cards, backgammon, and dominoes. Laughing, singing, arguing – they transform the public space into a portal to their home countries and pass the time together as they age.”
