LIONS AND NIGHTS: WORKS BY ROBERTA FRIEDMAN, GRAHAME WEINBREN AND ANTHONY FORMA

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31 at 8 PM

Roberta Friedman’s and Grahame Weinbren’s moving image works range across many formats from film, through analogue video and digital moving image, to hybrid forms. At base, their artistic practice is inspired by an enthusiasm for the very fact of cinema―the mystery and magic of capturing and displaying space, sound, motion, and time. Their works challenge accepted boundaries and combine established forms, and include collaborations with actors and non-actors, musicians, designers, and artists of all types. If there is a unifying factor, it is in the search for temporal architectures within which the moving image can communicate what lies beyond the limits of language. Roberta and Grahame were at CalArts with Anthony Forma in the early 1970s, and the three of them have worked together on many projects in the four decades since. Though Forma is nominally the ‘DP’ on many of their projects, he is more accurately described as a collaborator, since his ideas percolate throughout the production. FILMMAKERS IN ATTENDANCE!
