FREE EVENT!

LA AIR invites local artists to utilize EPFC resources in creating and premiering new, experimental, documentary, and personal work over a two-month period. EPFC’s fall 2018 LA AIR artist is Carmina Escobar.

Memory is an act of creation and recreation. A voice is a construct of the self. Perdida en Los Angeles is a project that explores the possible poetics of found footage and recorded scenes in different film gauges in the Los Angeles area, synchronized to soundscapes using mainly vocal sounds, in order to create a series of short pieces that question identity, imaginative narratives, and the process of fiction.

Experimental vocalist Carmina Escobar is a performer, improviser, sound and intermedia artist from Mexico City. Her work focuses primarily on sound, the voice, the body, and their interrelations to physical, social, memory and present spaces. She has extensively explored the capacities of her voice developing a wide range of vocal techniques that she applies not only to her performance and creative practice but also to investigate radical ideas and concepts regarding the voice. In her artwork the Voice is the phenomenon and conceptual trigger that links all the materials, analogue or digital, in order to create an experience that sets in motion the audience perception. Currently holder of the National Fund for the Culture and Arts Emerging Creator award in the Multimedia category in México, she has been awarded USArtist International Award 2010 with the Estamos Ensemble Project, and 2014 NFA Master Artist Grant, among others. She has presented her own work in diverse festivals, biennials, experimental venues, formal concert halls and living rooms of the Mexican Republic, the USA, and Europe. Currently she facilitates the experimental voice workshop at CalArts.
