It continues the cinematographic and historical excavations, proceedings by montage and association, silent alarms and naked dawns of the eleven-year-old blog, Kino Slang. This month we present:                                                                                

THE BOSS DIDN’T SAY GOOD MORNING (1937, Jacques Tourneur, 11 minutes) When ordinary office worker John Jones’s boss doesn’t return his routine “good morning”, Jones and his family live in anguish over the implications. Exhorting the boss, the narrator of the film (Carey Wilson) wants to know “whether John Jones is happy, and what relation to life John Jones has that gives him inspiration and the ability and willingness to live.”

THE WRESTLER AND THE CLOWN (1957, Boris Barnet & Konstantin Yudin, 95 minutes) At the turn of 20th century, Ivan Poddubny, a longshoreman, and Anatoly Durov, a clown, are employed at the Odessa circus. Far from glory both are exploited by the circus masters and face their cruelty and conniving. On tour in Petersburg, Poddubny refuses to wrestle with Bouchet, a Frenchman who has rubbed oil onto his skin. Under pressure he decides to quit the circus and the sport save for one last match.
