FILMIC TRANCE 2
Saturday, June 2 at 8 PM
Doors 7:30 PM; $5 admission
Another evening of rare and groundbreaking ethnographic and experimental films that showcase and explore the concept of trance- or semi-conscious states – and their use in religion, healing and artistic expression from the archives of Smokehouse Films. Come out to the Echo Park Film Center and enter a strange and wondrous world of healing ceremonies, ritualized dances, and other trance states from around the world. Curator, John Cannizzaro, has chosen a wide and varied program of films which include; Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson’s “ Trance and Dance in Bali” – (photographed 1930s, released 1952 ) Depicts a performance of Balinese people dancing while going through violent trances, stabbing themselves with daggers without injury, David Lebrun’s “Sanctus” (1967) – a film tracing the parallels between the mass, the bullfight and the sacred mushroom ceremony of the Mazatec Indians in a remote mountain region of Oaxaca, and Curator, John Cannizzaro’s “The Temptation of St. Anthony” (2012) – A sequence from a work-in-progress on the life of the great desert Hermit-Saint. Retiring to the desert to pray, Anthony is besieged by devils, temptations, and visions culminating in a blasphemous crucifixion that mocks his piety. Curator/Filmmaker John Cannizzaro, Filmmaker David Lebrun and refreshments will be present.
