Friday, August 4: 6:30 PM DISCUSSION AT KAOS NETWORK; 8 PM MOVIES OUTSIDE IN LEIMERT PARK

In continuing Echo Park Film Center’s series on Race & Space in Los Angeles, this installment turns its focus towards the women filmmakers of the LA Rebellion.

Beginning in the late 1960s, a number of promising African and African American students entered the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, recruited under a concerted initiative by C.Z. Wilson to be more responsive to various communities of color. From that first class through the late 1980s, and continuing well beyond their college days, to now, these filmmakers came to represent the first sustained undertaking to forge an alternative Black Cinema practice in the United States. Along the way, they created fascinating, provocative and visionary films that have earned an impressive array of awards and accolades at festivals around the world in addition to blazing new paths into the commercial market.

Occasionally called the “Los Angeles School of Black Filmmakers,” and perhaps more frequently “LA Rebellion,” the group’s significance is too far reaching to be fairly contained by any one name. In this exhibition, some aspects of the story have been told before, in articles and in panel discussions, and at retrospective screenings of key films. Now, Echo Park Film Center and LA Freewaves with KAOS Network has undertaken “Race and Space: The Women of the LA Rebellion” to help illuminate previously unknown aspects of the story, the artists and the work, and facilitate a greater understanding of the whole.
