Driftless: A Film by Gina Kelly

Saturday, June 23 at 8 PM

Doors 7:30 pm; $5 admission

Driftless is a piece of direct cinema by artist/filmmaker Gina Kelly (b.1979) and was made with the intention of witnessing a friend in a state of transition on multiple levels. Seasonally structured, Driftless follows Mica O’Herlihy, transgender parent of 3, as they undergo hormone replacement therapy and confront the painful decision to sell their isolated midwestern farm and give their young family a shot at a better future. The film was shot over a period of 2 years in the Driftless region of Wisconsin, an area that the glaciers missed as they flattened the rest of the upper midwest, and in Oakland, CA, where Mica finally lands to begin a new life. Evoking timeless themes of trauma and rebirth, illness and aging, Driftless quietly constructs a powerful testament to a parent’s love. Gina Kelly graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago with an MFA in Studio Art, and attended the School of Film/Video at the California Institute of the Arts where she earned a BFA.  Kelly lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, and this is her first feature-length film. The screening will open with Love Under Will of the Hag’s Long Tooth (2015), a hand-rotoscoped animation by Mica O’Herlihy, which has screened most recently at the Ann Arbor Film Festival (2017).  Chaga mushroom tea will be served for the screening. Filmmaker in Attendance!
