DIRECT ANIMATION TECHNIQUES: CREATING TEXT ON FILM

SUNDAY JANUARY 17, 1-5PM

In this tactile, visceral and hands-on workshop participants will learn various techniques to create direct text onto the film emulsion. This will focus on scratching images off with exacto knifes, hammering letter punches on the film surface and altering a typewriter to flick the emulsion off the image. Participants will be given a brief history of direct animation techniques and will be taught the layering of emulsion and different surfaces on film, and see brief examples of 16mm loops where these techniques are used. Participants then will be taught how to register and expand these techniques onto the film frame-by-frame, by hand. Materials will be provided for, although participants are encouraged to bring any already-processed/found 16mm film they would like to alter (best results with acetate bases). No previous experience with any film equipment necessary.
