COMMERCIAL VALUE: THE DAVID STERN COLLECTION – 16mm WORKS

THURSDAY, MARCH 26 at 8 PM

David “Smitty” Stern was an award-winning cinematographer and director for over 30 years. His resume is vast and fascinating, including production credits with cult filmmakers like Jack Hill, Roger Corman and Bob Cresse, various acting credits and a stand-up comedy album. David began his advertising career with firms that appreciated his vision and allowed him to use that creativity to promote the product. Whether he was shooting a band (he did “music videos” for The Turtles and others), a cigarette commercial or a food product, there was always something quintessentially “Smitty” about his work.

The commercials that will be presented at this event were all made between 1967 and the early 1980s and will be shown on 16mm. You are likely to see (or hear) many familiar people and products. After all, a certain highly popular and sequel-ized science fiction film was released in 1977, right? So, you are invited to come and enjoy these works as they represent the beginning of David Stern’s successful commercial career. Stern went on to win a Telly, an award in Cannes, and several others for his efforts in the advertising industry. He made the My Little Pony and JEM advertisements that you know and love, as well as many, many more. This was a man who truly loved what he did and we are so pleased to be sharing that work with you at this time.
