Belonging In The USA: Stories From Our Neighbors

Thursday, September 27 at 8 PM

Doors 7:30 pm; $5 admission

A new documentary series from filmmaker, Arielle Nobile.  Each episode tells the life story of an individual, our neighbor, and is framed by historical context and cultural influences, the wisdom this person has garnered as a result of their experiences, and what “belonging in the USA” means to them.  The series is an invitation to get curious about our neighbors and explore what we have in common, rather than what divides us, which is what the mainstream media so often focus on.

This screening is the pilot episode, which features Michael D. McCarty.  A member of the Chicago chapter Black Panther Party, army veteran, acupuncturist, Sai Baba devotee, and professional storyteller, he found his purpose in teaching storytelling workshops to inmates in the California prison system.

Nobile believes in radical empathy, feeling so connected to another person’s story and experience that all barriers and boundaries disappear.  When the superficial falls away, we can celebrate what unites us – our shared humanity. We’ll involve the audience in a discussion afterwards about their ideal vision for this country, and the concepts of belonging and freedom.  For more info and the trailer: belongingintheusa.com
