BB FOREVER: INCITE Double Release Party + Screening

Friday, May 6 at 8pm

This 5/6, join us as we celebrate the publication of our latest INCITE: Journal of Experimental Media offerings: BLOCKBUSTER (#5) and FOREVER (#6).

With these two issues, INCITE extends its tendrils into new and fertile territories: the microcosm of media preservation, and the mass effect of the Blockbuster turn in contemporary art. As BLOCKBUSTER editor Peter Nowogrodzki writes: Even when we don’t want to address the megaplex, we already have. We can’t really look away. We live in ever-more intimate proximity to impersonal fame and distant celebrity. Los Angeles doesn’t just play itself, as Thom Andersen said in 2003, today the city asserts itself: it is popular, atomized, and always in dispersal. And now it’s in INCITE too – though even in absence, the presence of Hollywood was here all along. Highlights include projects and artwork by Ian Cheng, Jodie Mack, and Lucy Raven; Yelp reviews of The Getty, Red Lobster, and Guggenheim Museum by Brian Droitcour; Anna Ialeggio on the the simulation of modern war at Fort Irwin’s National Training Center; an interview with L.A. cultural theorist and critic Norman Klein, and much more.

Meanwhile, FOREVER, edited by Walter Forsberg and John Klacsmann and spanning a century of media history, asks: In contemporary economies of immediacy and connectivity, what is temporality’s role and relevance other than as a force to be exploded? The issue features contributions by nearly three dozen movie artists and media archivists spanning the written word, the moving image, comics, found photography, video art, Twitter and – even – comedy. A limited edition of 200 artist-made multiples (a zine by Bradley Eros, a BluRay by Jon Dieringer, a rare reprint of the special audio compact cassette issue of the legendary Los Angeles experimental film magazine/art-book SPIRAL, and more) is also available.

Combining artwork and writing by contributors from both issues, this event features videos, films, and readings by: Peggy Ahwesh, Craig Baldwin, Colin Beckett, Rutherford Chang, Ian Cheng, Jon Dieringer, Clint Enns, Anna Ialeggio, Gregory Kalliche, Oliver Laric, Charles Levine, Jodie Mack, Jesse McLean, Peter Nowogrodzki, Ian Page, Sabrina Ratté, Lucy Raven, Soda_Jerk, and Leslie Supnet
