Join us on ‘Solstice Eve’ for a retrospective of shorts by filmmaker, activist, and educator Anne Chamberlain. Her experimental 16mm films of the late 1980s and ‘90s tackle media and civil rights themes that have become even more immediate today. Included in the program are Thelma & Louise Don’t Live Here Anymore 1995, which appropriates Hollywood depictions of sexual assault, for a #MeToo message long before that movement had a name. Through optical printing juxtaposed with an original song score, Ride on Rosa 1995 tackles racism and white silence, while celebrating black female activists. Lesbian invisibility in media is explored in two classics of the New Queer Cinema: the poetic AIDS opus Condomnation 1992, and the mock-documentary Burden of Dykes 1994. The raw elements of cinema itself are exposed in A Feminist Film 1988, which interrogates the meaning of that concept through hand-drawn animation on 16mm images, and also in Premenstrual 1992, a camera-less view of a menstrual cycle. The video documentary Tales of ‘The Pit’ 1997 reveals rural distances in LGBTQ culture, and the mid-west context in which these films were made. FILMMAKER IN ATTENDANCE!
