Adele Horne – The Tailenders with Quiero Ver

Saturday, February 4th at 8pm

Adele Horne’s “The Tailenders” (2006) is a film portrait of an unlikely audio archive. Global Recordings Network (or GRN), is an evangelical audio-visual media company founded in Los Angeles in 1939 with the goal to record the Bible in every language on earth. Fusing religious fervor with technological ingenuity, GRN pioneered a plethora of cheap, ultra-low-tech devices for audio playback, most notably the “Cardtalk”, a hand-powered cardboard phonograph. To date, GRN has created audio recordings of the Bible in over 6000 languages, many on the verge of extinction and possibly preserved nowhere else. Through a patient essayistic lens, Horne unravels the history and continued effort of GRN to Christianize the final frontier, those indigenous communities overlooked by worldwide evangelical efforts.“The Tailenders” follows GRN missions in the Solomon Islands, India, Mexico, and the United States.

To follow, we will screen Adele’s short film “Quiero Ver” (2008), a 16mm short meditation on vision seekers in the Mojave Desert.
