Thus A Noise Speaks (38min. 2010)

At 23 years of age, while at home for summer vacation, Kacchi finally confesses her belonging to the sexual minority to her parents. They reject the confession, however, and its memory begins to fade away, as if it never existed. Hoping for her parents’ understanding, and with a little taste for revenge, she decides to make a film of her confession with her family. In the space between documentary and fiction, swaying between reality and drama, where will it lead the performers?

This screening is part ACTION! Cinema as Sanctuary, a free summer series presenting political documentary films and workshops. ACTION! is made possible by support from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

 

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER

Kaori Oda was born in Osaka (Japan) in 1987. After graduating from Kansai Gaidai Junior College, Oda started filmmaking at Hollins University (US), where she completed the film course in 2011. Her first short film “Thus A Noise Speaks” was presented at festivals such as Tokyo International LGBT Film festival, IAWRT Asian Women’s Film Festival, and Nara International Film Festival where it received the Audience Award. She lived in Sarajevo for three years from 2013 and completed the Doctor of Liberal Arts in filmmaking under the supervision of Bela Tarr in 2016. Her first feature, ARAGANE, had its World Premiere at YAMAGATA International Film Festival 2015 and received Special Mention. The film is currently on tour at festivals around such as Doclisboa, Mar del Plata IFF, Sarajevo FF, Taiwan International Documentary FF and more.  She is a recipient of Grants for Overseas Study by Young Artists of Pola Art Foundation.

ACTION! Cinema as Sanctuary

Political documentary films take on a renewed role amid a reinvigorated rage against immigrants, refugees, and people of color in many places around the world. Through politically engaged cinematic work, many filmmakers are confronting old and new forms of racism, the deepening ungrievability of Black and Brown lives, and precarious realities faced by minority communities including indigenous peoples, the elderly, refugees, women and children. ACTION! series: Cinema as Sanctuaryfeatures political documentary films that re-assert the images and stories that remind us that a compassionate world rooted upon solidarity, friendship, and collective action is possible.
