ACTION! CINEMA AS CATALYST presents THE HOUSE IS BLACK

“ACTION! Cinema As Catalyst invites filmmakers and activists to present a ‘political’ film that in some way inspires/reflects their own work. This month’s presenting filmmaker is Jennifer Saparzadeh; her selection is The House Is Black. The first and only film of acclaimed Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad, The House Is Black is a lyrical film set in a leper colony in Northern Iran, juxtaposing verse with staggering imagery. Made in 1963, the film heavily influenced the modern Iranian cinema of  modern Iranian cinema of Abbas Kiarostami and Mohsen Makhmalbaf, who called it “the best Iranian film. Farsi film, English subtitles. Also on the program is “baba”, a poem by Hila Sedighi. Hila Sedighi is a contemporary Iranian poetess who has been arrested by the government multiple times since 2011 for her work and activism. She has expressed being influenced by Fourough Farrohkzad and this particular poem is about the disappearance of her father, which happened when she was a child.
