THE BIG PICTURE: A 35MM Direct Animation Workshop

SUNDAY MARCH 27, 1-5PM

This class is full. We will offer this workshop again at a later date. Please check back in in a couple of months.

Len Lye, Storm de Hirsch, Oscar Fischinger & Stan Brakhage are just a few of the many innovators of avant-garde cinema. These filmmakers experimented heavily with various direct filmmaking techniques: scratching, painting, pasting and collaging onto clear or exposed celluloid. These techniques were usually applied to 8MM, S8MM and 16MM film, but in this workshop participants will have the chance to work on a larger surface area…35MM!

The first hour of the workshop, we will watch a selection of films that utilize direct animation techniques from the filmmakers mentioned earlier as well as a few tests on 35MM by LA AIR resident, Caitlin Díaz. Participants will spend the remainder of the workshop working on their own films. Materials such as 35mm film, paint, india ink, markers, pens, tape, stickers, etc will be provided.

Participants will create their own short animation which will be scanned and delivered as a hi-res digital file. The films will be screened March 25th 2016 in conjunction with Díaz’s LA AIR project and some of her previous direct films.
