From stop-motion chewing gum to CGI dancing trolls, 12/24 (Twelve Twenty-four) features a kaleidoscope of handmade and self-produced animations from both emerging and established creators mostly living and working in LA. It’s a program that celebrates the passion and struggle inherent to working frame-by-frame — whether it’s 12 or 24 per second. By carving out a space for handmade animation, 12/24 aims to preserve an art form that is increasingly being displaced by technological advancements and provide a platform for experimental work.

Works featured include: “Smoke’s Last Thought,” a recent hand-drawn film from Cal State LA professor Miranda Javid, that follows a wisp of smoke as she rises through LA and mourns her imminent disappearance; Hand-drawn “Pride of Strathmoor,” from LA-based Einar Baldvin, about a racist pastor’s descent into madness leading up to a boxing match between a black fighter and a white fighter; as well as CGI microshorts by Sam Shea and 16mm collage work by Minjung Kim. Other contributors include Amanda Bonaiuto, Ilia Mazo, Jamie Wolfe, Tony Nittoli, Cait Davis, Weston Lyon and Sam Gurry.

12/24 is curated by Lila Seidman, a self-taught animator, who will be premiering a claymation short about Vincent Van Gogh as part of the program.
